The Black Pil (Black Pilsner) is a cult-favorite seasonal and occasional mainstay from Banff Ave Brewing Co. Located in the heart of the Rockies, Banff Ave designed this beer to challenge the eyes and delight the palate. It is a "Schwarzbier" (German for black beer), which is essentially the dark cousin of a traditional Pilsner. It offers the roasted, complex flavors typically associated with a Stout or Porter but maintains the light body, crispness, and clean finish of a classic lager.
Beer Description
This Black Pilsner pours a deep, dark mahogany that appears nearly jet-black in the glass, topped with a thick, tan-colored creamy head.
Aroma: It features a surprising and sophisticated nose. Despite its dark color, it leads with the clean, floral, and spicy aromatics of noble hops. Underneath, there are gentle notes of toasted bread crust, bittersweet cocoa, and a hint of cold-brew coffee.
Palate: On the tongue, it is medium-light-bodied and remarkably crisp. It leads with a subtle, dark malt sweetness—think dark chocolate and toasted nuts—but avoids any heavy, syrupy mouthfeel. The finish is remarkably dry and "snappy," with a clean bitterness that quickly refreshes the palate.
Profile: It has an ABV of 4.8% and a moderate bitterness of 25-30 IBU, making it a "dark beer for people who like light beer."
Technical Notes: Brewed with a base of premium Pilsner malt and a careful addition of de-bittered roasted malts (like Carafa III). This allows the beer to achieve its striking black color and roasted flavor without the harsh, ashy astringency often found in stouts. It is fermented cold with a traditional lager yeast and aged (lagered) for several weeks to ensure a smooth, clean profile.
