This structured and 'muscular' red wine originates from Australia, within the legendary Barossa Valley region of South Australia. Produced under the guidance of master winemaker John Duval; former Penfolds Chief Winemaker who crafted the iconic Grange for 16 years, the Compono label highlights the exceptional quality of cool-climate Cabernet Sauvignon grown across select sub-regions of the Barossa. Sourced from old-vine vineyard blocks in the higher-altitude Eden Valley and northern Barossa Valley, the vines are rooted in ancient, well-draining soils composed of ironstone, gravelly loam, and clay over limestone subsoils. The microclimate combines warm, sun-drenched daytime heat with crisp, cooling evening winds off the Mount Lofty Ranges, allowing Cabernet Sauvignon to achieve complete phenolic maturity while preserving an energetic, mouthwatering natural acidity and an imposing structural frame.
Wine Description
John Duval Compono Cabernet Sauvignon presents a deep, opaque garnet-purple color in the glass with vivid crimson-ruby highlights along the rim. Its sensory profile is exceptionally fresh, high-toned, and complex, delivering an elegant, intense, and precisely focused expression of cool-climate South Australian Cabernet. The bouquet opens with a lavish display of crème de cassis, wild dark plums, and crushed blackberries, seamlessly layered with complex underlays of dried mint, eucalyptus leaf, dark chocolate, graphite, sweet cedarwood, and a touch of savory French oak spice. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, muscular, and athletic, showcasing a succulent, mouth-coating core of black stone fruits, cocoa nibs, and dried sage. It is characterized by its outstanding inner energy and an incisive, mouthwatering backbone of natural acidity that cuts cleanly through the rich mid-palate extract. The mouthfeel is broad, velvety, and linear, driven by firm, fine-grained, and chalky tannins that glide into an extraordinarily long, dry, and savory finish accented by persistent notes of cassis, black pepper, and toasted oak.
